Every company must train its employees on a number of topics. The legislature wants it that way – and, of course, there is a reason for it. A classic topic for mandatory training is, for example, occupational safety. If employees do not learn how they can protect themselves in a company, accidents will inevitably occur. And nobody wants that. How an employer trains its employees is up to them. In addition to classic face-to-face training, more and more companies today are offering online courses. One type of online training is Web-Based Training (WBT). Find out here why mandatory training in the form of a WBT makes sense and what the differences are.
A Web-Based Training is a sub-type of e-learning. It is also referred to as a further development of so-called Computer-Based Trainings (CBT). However, while CBTs are transported on data carriers such as CDs, a WBT no longer needs these. This is because it resides on a server. This has the advantage, among other things, that learners can access the training anytime and anywhere.
The design of a Web-Based Training can be very different. When we talk about WBT, we always also mean interactivity. This means the learner is not just rigidly guided through the learning units, but must repeatedly solve small tasks and do exercises in between. At the end of the training, there is usually a final test. Furthermore, the learner should be motivated to complete the training attentively. A WBT should therefore also be visually appealing and well-thought-out in terms of flow.
Web-Based Trainings have many advantages over face-to-face training:
Mandatory training sessions are known to often not be very popular. But that is all a question of how the learning content is presented. A Web-Based Training offers many possibilities here to make learning more attractive: complexity reduction, learning at an individual pace, storytelling makes content more exciting, microlearning presents the learning material in smaller units, and, of course, gamification in the form of small tasks.
Since a Web-Based E-Learning is played out as a SCORM or xAPI package, it can be tracked how many chapters have already been completed, how long a user took, whether they passed the final test, what result the final test was passed with, and when the WBT was completed.
A Web-Based Training generally lasts between 20 and 50 minutes (depending on chapter length) and is therefore significantly shorter than face-to-face training.
Web E-Learnings or Web-Based Trainings can be produced in various forms such as real film, animation, whiteboard animation, and hybrid style.
Since a Web-Based Training resides on a central web server, changes reach all learners simultaneously. If something changes in the learning material, it can be adjusted directly and rolled out accordingly.
To be able to offer Web-Based Training, a company needs a Learning Management System (LMS). This is a learning platform on which the Web-Based Training system can be integrated. Many companies are already working with such systems. Modern WBTs can be integrated here without any problems. Therefore, the format should always be queried before purchasing training. Common standards are SCORM or xAPI packages.
Behind the term WBT, as already indicated above, a lot can be hidden. For us, it is a modern, well-thought-out, and attractive learning format that engages and motivates learners. But it can also be much less than that. As a core feature, it is enough that it resides on a web server. Find out here how to recognize a good Web-Based Training.
