Further education and artificial intelligence: where are we heading?

Some think of the term Artificial Intelligence (AI) first as robots in science fiction movies. However, after the topic was only discussed and applied in the research sector for many years, AI is now becoming increasingly interesting for the economy thanks to constantly evolving software technologies. And this also makes artificial intelligence an exciting option for the E-Learning industry for the future.

It is therefore little surprise that various providers now have AI products and services in their portfolio. However, the development status of the available applications is often not yet up to par and fully mature. Because the trade with AI technologies has just begun to really pick up speed. If you compare the history of artificial intelligence with that of the internet, the development status of AI is roughly in the 1990s.

 

AI in corporate training – the first steps have been taken.

AI is also still in its infancy in corporate training. Experts are unanimously of the opinion that most AI products and services are currently acceptable, but still not working at the highest level.

Many companies rely in particular on recommendation systems and chatbots to train their employees. Chatbots often don't even run with AI, as they merely reel off pre-made conversations using rules, which often leaves a sobering impression on humans.

However, according to the experts, this is not due to the applications themselves, but usually to the uncreative handling or programming of the systems, which certainly offer the ability to achieve more.

 

The three most used AI technologies.

Currently, over thirty different AI technologies are available. The following are mostly used:

  1. Machine Learning (overarching category) refers to, according to Wikipedia, the “artificial generation of knowledge from experience,” i.e., independent (additional) learning. As a rule, this technology is used for categorization and forecasts. But machine learning will also gain in importance for the development of games in order to create varied, realistic gaming experiences. Even today, live betting, Video & Mobile Games, or Random-Number-Generator-Games contain algorithms that influence who wins and who doesn't.
  2. Natural Language Understanding (ML): One knows this AI technology from Alexa, Siri, or voice controls in vehicles – users speak a command and the system executes it. Development here is progressing rapidly. Some applications are already capable of dialogue.
  3. Image recognition (ML): The most well-known example here is Google image search. But apps like Pinterest also work with image recognition software, which offers the user suggestions based on their preferences.

Design possibilities of AI in corporate training

For companies, artificial intelligence offers above all the possibility to intelligently use, analyze, and prepare internal data so that important information is available where it is needed. In addition to data preparation, automation and adaptability are also likely to offer interesting possibilities for the use of AI in corporate training.

In particular, the adaptability of systems and content is, according to experts, a big plus of AI in corporate training. For example, learning content in E-Learning courses could be individually adapted for a user based on their interests or talents with the help of learning analytics. But learning paths would also have the possibility to dynamically adapt to the learning speed and level of knowledge of the learners.

Experts see further advantages of AI in the organization of continuing education: for example, in the optimization of appointment and trainer scheduling or through chatbots that assist with booking. Further areas of application could be: benchmarking, scoring, rewards, or correction. New formats such as drill & practice applications for vocabulary or clever learning games are also possible.

There are also good ideas for the development of Learning Management Systems. An AI could record and analyze the learning behavior of users in order to determine which learning type the learner belongs to, e.g., whether they are a visual, haptic, or auditory type. This way, the entire learning process could be individually better adapted to the user's behavior.

This perfection of individualization and personalization for users is only offered by artificial intelligence. An employee's or learner's area of responsibility or professional goals could provide clues that they receive only relevant learning content that has been personally selected for them by the AI from a company's existing learning material. As a time-saving measure, the appropriate sections could be precisely marked in long presentations or learning videos. An additional motivational boost for the learners!

 

Area of application: behavior monitoring.

So-called ‘NUDGE‘ based learning techniques could stimulate behavioral changes in communication by checking written emails with the help of sentiment analysis. The NLU (natural language understanding) AI then evaluates whether superiors are motivating or demotivating their employees and then trains them accordingly. Finally, artificial intelligence automatically checks whether the lessons have been implemented and show a positive effect.

 

Obstacles and hurdles for artificial intelligence.

However, such applications are likely to fail in Germany and the EU due to strict data protection laws and usually cause raised eyebrows in Europe. For experts, however, data protection represents one of the biggest obstacles for artificial intelligence, since AI algorithms are trained with data, i.e., Big Data as a fundamental prerequisite for artificial intelligence!

Further hurdles are to be found in the companies themselves – the mostly still backward digitalization and the economic aspect of using AI for training purposes. Because ultimately, the effort must also pay off.

 

Conclusion: In the coming years, many applications will be of higher quality, more mature, and less expensive. It remains exciting.
