In part 1 of our two-part series on the topic of LMS for companies, we explained exactly what a Learning Management System is, how it helps companies move forward, and what its advantages, disadvantages, and functions are. In part 2, we provide a checklist that summarizes what you should definitely pay attention to when choosing one.
If you are deciding on learning management software, you should consider the following 10 steps.
#1 Define goals: Ultimately, the learning management system must do one thing above all: fit your goals and your company. Consequently, before choosing learning management software, you should internally define the goals that are to be achieved with the implementation.
#2 Involve employees: You should involve your employees in the decision-making process from the very beginning. Where do the current problems lie? How can these be solved by learning management software? If your staff recognizes the benefit and added value, you increase the chances that the LMS system will also be used intensively in the end.
#3 Choose a SaaS solution: In this day and age, permanently installed software creates more trouble than it brings good. We clearly recommend relying on so-called SaaS solutions (Software as a Service solutions), i.e., web-based systems.
#4 Check functions: The learning management software should cover versatile functions, e.g., technical requirements for multimedia, simple import of data, uncomplicated invitation of participants, the possibility for multilingualism, an automatic sending of certificates. Find out in detail in advance whether the functions necessary for achieving your goals are covered.
#5 Check design: In order to influence your corporate goals and create employee loyalty, it is essential that the learning management system is set up in your company design. Therefore, also pay attention to the customization options in terms of layout.
#6 Test service: Especially at the beginning, you will have many questions about learning platforms – competent contact persons and a service that can be reached in Germany (no call center) will help with this.
#7 Ask about content management: Ideally, you can maintain content yourself and are not dependent on a third-party provider for every typo or every updated number. Find out if this is possible with your desired LMS.
#8 Compare prices: As a rule, learning management systems differ particularly in price. Often, in addition to the basic flat rate, you pay per user for the setup. Calculate these costs for an entire year and compare them with your current further training costs. Does this sum pay off?
#9 Arrange a demo appointment: Get a comprehensive picture of your (possibly future) LMS system in a free demo before you make a decision.
#10 Check data protection: Ensure that the learning management software is hosted on German servers and complies with GDPR guidelines so that you do not experience any unpleasant surprises later.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of an LMS in a company? For which areas of application is an internal learning management system suitable? What about functions and technology? You can find all the basics on the topic of learning management software in part 1 of our series on the topic of LMS systems.
