This is how gamification ensures motivation for the learner

Playful elements in digital learning environments (gamification) are not necessarily a guarantee that learning success will occur on its own. They only lead to long-term success if the user can motivate themselves through them. To promote self-motivation, four best practices can be derived:

  • Leave room for the new: only show the learner as much information as necessary and avoid unnecessary distracting elements that are not needed in learning mode at the time.

  • Promote independence: give the learner the opportunity to reach their goal from different directions. "Learning signposts" should serve as orientation.

  • Transparent communication: clearly communicate the terms of use and the learning objectives so that the learner knows what kind of "reward" awaits. Learning success checks and leaderboards provide orientation and increase motivation.

  • Ensure a self-contained experience: independence, transparency, and the avoidance of distracting elements ensure that the learner stays on the ball longer and the learning phase is not interrupted prematurely.

An interesting video contribution on the topic of gamification from the program "W wie Wissen" can be found in the ARD Mediathek.
