E-learning is on everyone's lips. But the best platforms and tools are worthless without goal-oriented content. How do you create exciting e-learning content? What formats are there anyway? And where can I buy e-learning content if I lack the capacity to create it myself? Get to know modern possibilities and gather inspiration for upcoming projects.

What is E-Learning?

E-learning is the abbreviation for "electronic learning." It refers to learning that is supported by digital media. The term has established itself alongside online learning, distance learning, or multimedia learning. However, e-learning is not only used in schools or universities. This modern form of learning has also long been very popular in companies and academies.

Lifelong learning is the focus. But learning does not have to be as dry as this term sounds. Digital learning makes it possible to:

  • explain complex topics simply
  • design varied content
  • encourage interaction and feedback
  • address every learning level individually
  • increase learning motivation
  • present yourself as a modern company

As a rule, e-learning can take place on all channels: whether on a computer, tablet, or smartphone.

Good electronic learning requires two things: E-learning software adapted to your needs and the corresponding e-learning content. You can also find out more about this in our video.

What formats are there for e-learning content?

When thinking of e-learning content, infographics and learning videos usually come to mind. But there is more. Typical formats for e-learning content, which we will discuss in more detail below, are:

Augmented Reality / Virtual Reality

The terms Augmented or Virtual Reality describe the possibilities of expanding realities thanks to digital solutions. The real environment can be supplemented via specially made glasses and associated software or apps. Or the user completely immerses themselves in a virtual world. In practice, Augmented Reality can, for example, display instructions directly in the user's field of vision, matching the upcoming work step. Virtual Reality enables virtual previews (e.g., for furnishings) or 360-degree tours.

Gamification / Game Based Learning

The idea behind Game Based Learning or gamified content is playful knowledge transfer, which is considered particularly motivating. A simple example is a quiz or puzzle used to test specialist knowledge. Various designs and game options bring real variety to your e-learning content.

Infographics as E-Learning Content

A picture is worth 1,000 words. And it is the same with e-learning content. Extensive text can easily be transformed into a clear infographic. Users have the most important key facts at a glance. Through the visual elements in infographics, content is conveyed in additional ways – a recipe for success for sustainable learning.

Mobile Content

Hardly anyone leaves the house without their smartphone these days. Or one immediately gets the feeling of having forgotten something. The mobile phone is simply part of everyday life. Why not offer e-learning content via mobile as well? Learning independent of location allows companies, in particular, a lot of flexibility. It doesn't matter in what form this takes place: as a learning app, radio play/podcast, or in the form of videos.

Microlearning Content

Learning in small units has several advantages. On the one hand, the hurdle to sit down with the content is lower. After all, it involves little time. On the other hand, microlearning is also considered particularly effective. Content can be easily repeated and moves into long-term memory. Find out more about microlearning here!

Learning Videos as E-Learning Content

Learning videos visually explain what is difficult to describe with words alone. Through (moving) images, animations, or drawings, complex content is clarified, conveyed via multiple senses, and thus internalized much more sustainably.

Simulations and Business Games

Similar to a flight simulator, simulations and business games offer the opportunity to try things out without risk and to put oneself in unfamiliar situations. An ideal "playground" for testing things and conveying content in a realistic way.

Computer / Web Based Trainings (CBT / WBT)

Web Based Trainings are a further development of Computer Based Trainings. WBTs are internet-based and accessible from anywhere, while CBTs are tied to installed software. Web Based Training enables self-study, where the learner is systematically guided through learning units. Learn all about Web Based Trainings / WBT here.

This is what a WBT on the topic of "Occupational Safety" looks like ????

5 Tips: How do I create exciting e-learning content?

The mentioned e-learning formats alone make learning more exciting than classic frontal teaching. Nevertheless, you should keep a few things in mind when you want to create e-learning content.

Our tips:

  1. Evoke emotions: Hard facts are easier to forget than content that you link to your personal (work) environment. Convey the content in such a way that learners can imagine as much as possible and put themselves into corresponding situations. This brings the learning content to life.
  2. Surprise the learners: Nothing passes by faster than content that is hackneyed. Whether with an exciting format or the creative preparation of content: Think outside the box!
  3. Build a narrative arc: Through storytelling, you can bring a common thread into your e-learning content and thus convey knowledge more sustainably.
  4. Create interaction: If learners interact with each other, then it is – comparable to the real world – also more exciting in e-learning. After all, a healthy competitive incentive arises, if one thinks, for example, of an online quiz, which is also counted among e-learning content.
  5. Consider your target group: Not every one of the mentioned e-learning formats fits your target group. When making your selection, also consider their technical prior knowledge and create formats that are easy to use in practice.
